Historically Pollard stands guilty of needing an editor: his kitchen sink approach has resulted in a market flood, an incomprehensible wave of rambling releases. But "Business" refutes Pollard's artistic drift. Hewing - against the grain - to compositional convention Pollard fleshes out his vaguely familiar melodies with inventive, unpredictably expansive arrangements: a peculiar post-modern riff on so-called classic rock. The Genesis-like "Original Heart" thumps like a pre-MTV FM staple; the brittle, melancholy "Weatherman And Skin Goddess" unfolding like a lost Paul Weller classic, rate among Pollard's best.
